Paul Douglas
Paul Douglas began his time in the Civil Rights movement working under Martin Luther King Jr. One of the most dramatic moments of his life was when his wife Susan was registering people to vote and a bomb went off in the building she was in. Even years later when Paul would relate that story, listeners would feel his emotions as he described the anxious car ride to the site to find out if she was ok. She did survive that incident and they went on to spend the next 50 years together.
When Paul moved to Brooksville, he quickly got involved in serving the community. Over the years he helped start BEST Academy, was President of the NAACP and ran for County Commission. Paul's life stories were endlessly fascinating and many Hernando County students had the benefit of hearing them when he came to schools to speak about the Civil Rights movement.
