Dr. R. Moton High School was built by Hernando County School District in the early 1950s to accommodate black students during Jim Crow years until the schools were fully integrated in 1969.  Graduates Maulty Moore became the first in the county to play in the NFL and Hazel Land was the first female black woman to graduate from University of Florida Law School.
