Bio
Lorenzo Hamilton
In 1966, Lorenzo Hamilton started working at Moton High School. Hernando County schools were in the process of desegregation but it would be two years before it would be complete. During that time Hamilton saw a need for the black students transitioning to Hernando High School (an all white school prior to desegragation) to have support and mentorship. Hamilton helped the students assimilate into their new school setting by providing counseling, monitored grades, and helped encourage them into clubs and sports. Hamilton then formed the Kennedy Youth Center which focused on providing any and all assistance to black youth to help set them up for success. Hamilton also founded the Kenndy Park Little League and the Jets Girls Softball team. Many have said of his efforts that they would not have gone to college or to play sports at the college and professional level had it not been for the support and encouragement that Hamilton provided.
On August 7, 2023 the Brooksville City Council honored Hamilton by proclaiming August 26, 2023 Lorenzo Hamilton Life and Legacy Day.
