Leroy McKeown is the gentleman behind the wheel in the photo. Leroy’s family pioneered to Hernando County in 1851. According to Bobby Snow, Leroy was born on Mayo Hill, now known as Snow Hill, in 1891. He was know to be quite involved in his community and very driven. According to Snow, Leroy was active with Hernando County and State of Florida Road building. Leroy had great vision of the development of Croom and built a general store, automobile repair garage, and a cattle dipping vat for the tick infestation. Leroy passed away in 1934 when his automobile got out of control on an icey bridge on the Tamiami Trail in the Everglades. At that time Leroy was working as a Milk Inspector for the State of Florida. Leroy was married to Hattie Bean from Amory Mississippi. They had one child, Nancy Virginia McKeown born in 1923.
