Howard DeLaine
Howard was born into a sharecropper's family so his education (as well as that of his 16 siblings) was broken up by the need to harvest crops. According to an interview by Cherie Danson Miller, Howard completed third grade before going on to work full time. As an adult, Howard purchased rental properties and opened Howard's Cafe, an iconic gathering place for many in the community. Howard has been an important advocate for contamination cleanup and redevelopment of the Mitchell Heights neighborhood in Brooksville.
"Howard DeLaine has been a Brooksville resident for the entirety of his 95 years. A son of sharecroppers, his earliest memories are of picking peanuts, cotton and fruit. He came of age during a tough period in Brooksville where African-Americans were afforded few opportunities. Despite, having no more than a third-grade education (work took priority over school) he became one of Brooksville's most-valued sons. For more than 30 years, he worked in the construction business as a block layer, block builder and cement finisher. He took great pride in his work and was known for his skilled labor.
Eventually, Mr. DeLaine was given an opportunity to rent a pool hall, which he came to own a short time later. He turned it into a successful dance hall and restaurant at the center of the Black community. Perhaps, however, Mr. DeLaine is most well known as the owner and operator of Howard's BBQ where, for nearly a decade, he served up more than just delicious pork sandwiches and sides. "If people are hungry you feed them," says DeLaine. "If they need help you help them."
See, in addition to the example of his work ethic, is the example of his character. Howard DeLaine has offered employment, a free meal, a ride, or just a talk to anyone who has sought his counsel over his nine decades. His influence and mentorship are immeasurable, having encouraged and empowered countless others to work hard and have faith. He is a force of nature who at 95 years old, stitl drives and still works. He sells roasted peanuts from his property on Martin Luther King Blvd. which he has owned since 1966. He has been married to his wife Almazine for 63 years and they have raised five children. He has lived his life with the mantra of simply doing right by others and letting God deal with the rest. He has worked hard, he has overcome unfair obstacles, he has persevered and he has truly made a difference in the lives of everyone who has had the privilege of meeting him." - written by Cherie Miller
