Ambrose had 38 children. Born a free man in Detroit, his family was kidnapped into slavery when visiting relatives in the South.  He remained enslaved for twenty-one years and was sold multiple times for being “difficult.” He later worked as a tour guide for Brooksville’s Lewis Plantation, a roadside attraction based on the turpentine industry. His story is fascinating start to finish, much of which was documented in 1937  as part of the WPA’s Federal Writers Project.
